Unsere Forschung konzentriert sich auf vielfältige Faktoren im Rahmen der Entwicklung, die die Gesundheit eines Kindes entscheidend beeinflußen. Verschiedenste Risikofaktoren wie Ernährungsstörungen, Entzündungsprozesse oder eine frühzeitige Geburt können die Lebensfähigkeit und Lebensqualität eines Neugeborenen erheblich einschränken und wir möchten jetzt die molekularen Ursachen dieser Veränderungen und ihre Bedeutung für verschiedene Krankheitsbilder der Neugeborenen- und Kindesentwicklung verstehen.

Vermutlich führen kurzfristige Reize in einem kritischen Zeitfenster der Entwicklung zu langfristigen Störungen, die sich auf molekularer Ebene in epi­genetischen, proteomischen oder metabolischen Ver­änderungen manifestieren. Diese beein­trächtigen die Wechselwirkungen zwischen Zellen und der extrazellulären Umgebung, die Stabili­tät und Funktion eines gesamten Gewebes und somit die Lebensfähigkeit des Kindes.

In unserer derzeitigen Forschung untersuchen wir daher, auf welche Weise sich posttrans­kriptionale Veränderungen (z.B. miRNA), mitochondriale Dysfunktionen oder Störungen im Aufbau der Extrazellulären Matrix (EZM) auf die Kommunikation zwischen Zellen und ihrer unmittel­baren Umgebung auswirken und wie dies die Organentwicklung und -funktion während der fe­talen, neonatalen und postnatalen Entwicklung beeinflusst.

Langfristiges Ziel ist es, auf Basis dieser Forschung die Entwicklung neuer diagnostischer und therapeutischer Ansätze für Erkrankungen der Neugeborenen- und Kindesentwicklung voran­zutreiben.
